Why YEGO exists
YEGO is not a campaign and not a career. It is a commitment by young Nigerians to a process larger than any candidate, held to a standard of proof that can survive scrutiny.
Building Nigeria's Largest Youth-Led Citizens Observation, Vigilance & Early-Warning Mechanism Against Electoral Violence, Promote Peaceful Participation and Credible Election
YEGO's response to the weaknesses of Nigeria's electoral process is to move young Nigerians from passive voters to responsible citizen observers: informed, vigilant and willing to report concerns through the appropriate channels.
01
Citizens Electoral Observation Training
Observation and documentation of electoral processes and developments.
02
Early Warning Information Sharing Mechanism
Identification of emerging electoral risks and threats, and an information-sharing channel.
03
Incident Reporting
Structured collection, verification and transmission of credible incident information.
What the mission is working towards
A mission describes why the work exists. The goal describes what success would look like in the country YEGO is working for.
A Nigeria where millions of youths participate as citizen observers: informed, vigilant and equipped to contribute to peaceful, non-violent, credible and accountable elections.
The scale set against that aim is 50,000 Master Trainers and 300,000 Electoral Guards across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory: a goal for the 2027 General Elections cycle rather than a record of achievement.
Four commitments, held in public
These are not aspirations written for a brochure. Each one corresponds to work the programme is structured to do, and to conduct that is assessed in training.
01
Curbing electoral violence
Vigilance and early reporting against violence and intimidation.
02
Peaceful youth participation
Youth-focused engagement around non-violence and peaceful participation.
03
Electoral integrity
Structured observation of opening, accreditation, voting, counting and collation.
04
Democratic accountability
Turning election-time observers into long-term accountability fellows.
Three positions YEGO does not trade
A watchdog is only as credible as the positions it refuses to bend. These are stated without qualification, because the moment they carry conditions they stop being positions.
Non-partisan
YEGO does not support or campaign for any political party or candidate.
Independent citizens observation
YEGO volunteers observe, document, verify and report; they do not interfere with the administration of elections.
Institutional respect
YEGO works within applicable laws, electoral regulations and recognized observer standards, while respecting the independent mandates of INEC, security institutions and other public authorities.
Nigeria needs more citizen observers than conventional observers
Nigeria's electoral process cannot depend only on formally accredited election observers to protect the integrity of elections.
Domestic and international observers accredited by INEC for the 2023 General Election.
Yet challenges including electoral violence, voter intimidation, obstruction and concerns around electoral offences and accountability remained.
YEGO adds density and local knowledge to citizens observation. It complements accredited observation; it does not claim its standing, and it does not replace the mandate of any institution.
And what YEGO will never be
Four boundaries, restated here because a mission is defined as much by its limits as by its ambitions.
Not a security agency
Guards observe and report. They do not police, arrest or enforce.
Not a political party
YEGO does not support or campaign for any political party or candidate.
Not a campaign organization
No candidate, no platform, no endorsement, at any level.
Not a parallel electoral authority
YEGO does not conduct elections or replace the mandate of INEC.
